Some Phoenix residents may get kicked out of community

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A developer is looking to buy the Red Rose Mobile Home community, off 19th Street and Indian School Road in Phoenix.

The plan is to tear the mobile home park down, and replace it with a 220-unit, four-story apartment complex.

Destiny Martinez lives in the mobile home park with her three kids.

She said if the property is sold, almost 30 families will be forced to get out.

"It's going to be really hard for us," said Martinez. "We have nowhere else to go. This is our home for six years already."

"These people have built lives here, they are close to schools, close to churches and close to shopping," said G.G. George, who lives a few blocks away. "They should be taken into consideration. That is my point, we cannot treat these people as disposable objects."

CBS 5 spoke to several neighbors in the area, who also object to the new development, and are pushing to stop the city from rezoning the property.

They insist it will increase crime and traffic, and will severely disrupt their quiet neighborhood.

"It just doesn't fit with the climate of our community," said neighbor Steven Otte. "We have houses all around, and at the most, they are only two stories tall."

Alan Stephenson is acting director of the city's planning and development department.

He told CBS 5 that nothing is a done deal yet, which is why public hearings are held to hear the concerns from folks directly impacted.

"We do take into account the surrounding property owners, and what their interests are," said Stephenson. "That's why there is a public hearing process, so they can tell us what their thoughts are. It's not always a clear cut case."

A public hearing was held Tuesday night in front of the Phoenix Planning and Development Commission.

Residents will also have a chance to address the issue in front of the city council next month, Stephenson said.

State law requires the developer to provide financial and relocation assistance to any resident they are forcing out.
