MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AUM Athletics) - Lauren Shaw broke a two-run game open with a bases-clearing double and Taylor Powell tossed a six-hit complete game, as the Auburn Montgomery softball team clinched a spot in the championship game in the AUM Bracket of the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round with an 8-3 win over Indiana University Southeast.
The win snapped a 20-game winning streak by Grenadiers (42-11), who will now await the winner of an elimination game between No. 2 seed Houston-Victoria and No. 4 Bryan in a second elimination contest today at 7 p.m.
The Warhawks (40-6) will take on the winner of the final game of the day at noon Wednesday for a spot in the 34th Annual NAIA Softball World Series in Columbus, Ga., from May 23-29.
AUM took the lead for good in the first inning, taking advantage of four consecutive walks by IUS starter Jenna Swain (13-4). Katie Spain scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball by Shelby Lucas.
The Warhawks put the game out of reach with five runs in the second inning, keyed by the Shaw double. AUM also capitalized on three more walks, including a bases-loaded RBI walk by Spain. Shaw followed by lining a double down the left field line, plating Spain, Amie Kelly and Therese Byrne. Shaw later came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Grenadiers climbed back into the contest with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Leah Podgorny, Darcy Sapp and Morgan Klosterman each collected RBIs to keep IUS close.
AUM provided the final margin with a lone run in the fourth and sixth innings, as Spain scored on a Kayla Hale sacrifice fly and Byrne scored on a wild pitch. Each reached on doubles.
Powell made the lead stand up, scattering the six hits and allowing three runs. She struck out six, but walked five in improving to 21-1 on the year. Swain took the loss, allowing six runs on just two hits. She walked seven and did not record a strikeout.
Shaw was the lone player to finish with multiple hits for the Warhawks, as she was 2 for 3 with a run scored and three RBIs. Spain scored three times.
Jade Detzer led the Grenadiers at the plate, finishing 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Chelsey Frith added two hits.
