MPS Career and Technical Education Program outlook

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A large scale expansion program is underway right now within the Montgomery Public Schools System.

It's a proposal the board of education unanimously voted Tuesday to approve and its superintendent Margaret Allen's idea.

Montgomery Public School Superintendent Margaret Allen says it's time for something different.

"Looking at the entire cadre of programs that we have for career and technical educational for our students is very important," Allen said.

That's why Allen proposed the Career and Technical Educational Program Outlook. She says it's an opportunity to expand the program, serve more students and provide more opportunities for dual enrollment.

"There may be opportunity for us to add some structural space to some school locations as we go through this process," Allen said.

Here's the proposal breakdown:

Allen says currently Carver High School has advanced manufacturing and culinary arts academies. The proposal would add mechatronics, which will be industrial maintenance

Allen said the proposal would help to maintain the health science and teaching academies at Jefferson Davis High School.

She says it will help to maintain Lanier High School's business and finance academy as well as Lee High School's IT academy.

"Our big opportunity is to place at least nine additional programs in a location that would allow for a lot more opportunities such as pre-engineering, drafting, health science; another unit of health science," Allen said.

Allen says one of those potential locations is the old Montgomery Mall. She says most likely the M-Tech Center will be housed there.

The superintendent emphasized the point of gaining partners, which now includes community colleges and the state department of education.

Allen says in the near future we should see the ball rolling on this large scale proposal.

In other board action tonight, members were presented with the most recent M-P-S audit report.
