Lawmakers set to tackle electing city judges, copper and more

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Lawmakers are scheduled to weigh in on several issues at the Louisiana State Capitol on Wednesday.

They are set to discuss whether to make city-court judge an elected position. The Baton Rouge City Court issue gets to a Senate panel. Rep. Erich Ponti, R-Baton Rouge, wants to make all five judges in the city court be elected by a city-wide race.

Another measure is aimed at cracking down on copper theft. It could soon be against the law in Louisiana to pay cash for aluminum or copper air conditioning coils when buying them. Copper AC coil thefts have been up in the state.

It also appears the legislature wants to abolish the Governor's Office of Indian Affairs. If that bill clears, officials will, however, replace it with the Commission on Indians Affairs.

There are just two-and-a-half weeks left in the session.
