Deputy returns to full duty despite eligibility for full disability

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Despite his eligibility to take full disability and not work another day in his life, a Richland County Sheriff's deputy has returned to full duty months after an on-duty accident nearly took his life.

Sheriff Leon Lott announced Tuesday that Deputy Robert Furgal has been cleared by his doctors to go back on duty with the Uniform Patrol Division.

Furgal lost all of his toes, suffered a broken pelvis and was severely burned last November after he crashed his patrol vehicle into a tree in a heavy rain storm while responding to a burglary in progress. He had to be cut from the burning car.

Following months of rehabilitation, Furgal returned to light duty earlier this year.

Lott applauded Furgal, whom he classified as an "inspiration" to the department, for his effort and determination to return to service.

"With his injuries, Furgal could receive full disability and does not have to work another day in his life," said Lott. "Yet, Deputy Furgal insisted from day one on returning to the job he loves and service to the citizens of Richland County."

In April, Lott recognized two deputies and two EMT's who were instrumental in Furgal's rescue.

Deputy Furgal has been with the department since March, 2012.
