DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a phone scam.

Several people have reported receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be an investigator with the sheriff's office. According to Sheriff Jimmy Harris, the callers are using the names of real investigators.

The caller tells the victim a certain amount of money needs to be paid by money order or Green Dot Visa. Authorities warn the scam is used frequently nationwide but is currently widespread throughout the county.

The sheriff's office advices residents who are contacted about this scam to get as much information as possible from the caller and to report it to authorities.
