ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

The 32nd Annual Limestone County Sheriff's Rodeo kicked off Friday night.

A special needs rodeo was held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Around 500 people with disabilities enjoyed events like horseback rides, train rides and lessons on how to throw a lasso.

Sheriff Mike Blakely initiated the first ever sheriff's rodeo in Alabama back in the early 1980's. He said this event is his favorite part.

"It'll touch your heart," Sheriff Blakely said. "And really, these people are special, and I know it's something they look forward to every year. And Lord willing, it's something we're going to continue as long as I'm alive."

The professional cowboys and cowgirls take center stage Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. The gates open at 6 p.m., and activities, like pony rides for kids, last from 6-8 p.m.
