PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WTVM) – Central High School announced on Monday that Woodrow Lowe is no longer the head football coach.

Central principal Tommy Vickers said the school administration was looking for a new start, with an added emphasis on coordinating the program with the junior high school. A release from the board of education indicated that Lowe will stay on as a teacher, although Vickers said at which level he would teach was still to be determined.

The release from the board praised Lowe as "an icon in Phenix City and at Central High School, who has brought a great deal of positive publicity, humility, and recognition to our football program."

Lowe, the former Central star who went on to become a College Football Hall-of-Famer after an All-American career at Alabama and eleven seasons in the NFL, posted a 33-13 record in four years, taking the Red Devils to the playoffs three seasons, winning a region title in 2011 and leading the team to the AHSAA 6A state semifinals. Last season Central was 6-4, missing the playoffs for the first time under Lowe.

Lowe has a career prep coaching mark of 55-42 over nine seasons, including stops at Smiths Station from 2005-07 and Selma in 1994-95. He has also been an assistant coach in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs.

Vickers said the search for a replacement will begin immediately, with a target date of mid-June for a new hire.
