BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham City Schools board of education wants voters to consider a property tax increase.

The 3 mil increase would last for 30 years and BOE President Randall Woodfin says it would raise taxes on a $100,000 home by about $30 per year. He says this small investment could do wonders for schools.

"One hundred percent of the money will be used for classroom purposes only. We want to expand our pre-K program and put the pre-K program in every elementary school. We want to expand and increase our arts programs," Woodfin said.

The BOE's resolution will now go to the county commission for consideration. If the commission approves it, the increase will go to the voters Sept. 9, 2014.
