MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The oversized 18-wheeler that became lodged between concrete barriers in a construction zone on Interstate 85 has been removed and crews are working to open one lane for traffic.
The commercial truck and its escorts failed to obey signage warning of upcoming vehicle width reductions, along with orders to exit the interstate, prior to the construction zone at the Mitylene exit (exit 11).
The 18-wheeler became lodged in the barriers, bringing all northbound traffic behind it to a complete standstill for hours Tuesday evening.
Construction crews brought in a backhoe and removed the barriers so the commercial vehicle could be dislodged.
While crews worked to clear the truck, authorities were diverting all northbound traffic and Montgomery police officers were walking from car to car informing drivers to turn around in the median and go southbound.
As of 8 p.m. traffic was not being allowed beyond the Taylor Road exit (exit 9), but authorities were working to open one lane to get traffic flowing again.
The Alabama Department of Transportation, which is in charge of the construction, said its work was originally suppose to go through Friday, but officials are working to have it completed and have all lanes reopened by Wednesday.
