CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A report released by the Pew Research Center says the number of Americans who say they've had their accounts hacked and  important personal information stolen online is on the rise.

18% of adults said that they have had their social security number, credit card,  bank account information or other personal information stolen. That's risen 7% in 1 year.

WBTV's cyber expert, Theresa Payton, shares her advice on how to protect yourself:

1.  Have unique email addresses

2.  Monitor credit reports

3.  Consider protection services like LifeLock or IDTheft911

4.  Check sites that tell you about hacked emails like HaveIBeenPwned, PwnedList or ShouldIChangeMyPassword?

5.  Keep Operating Systems and Anti virus software up to date
