OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) -

Will Rivenbark has been casting his reel in the water ever since his father took him fishing when he was eight months old, but what he reeled in last week was one for his trophy case.

Rivenbark was fishing for stingrays off the Oak Island fishing pier and knew he had a good sized fish on his reel as soon as it hit, but what he pulled up was larger than he was. Rivenbark landed a 300+ pound rough tail stingray that was about a foot long and over 7 feet wide.

The angler said it didn't take him more than five minutes to get the ray gaffed and under control, but that it took five grown men over an hour to get the beast on to the pier. Rivenbark talked about what it was like when he hooked the ray.

"When he hit I knew it was a good size ray, but when he got to the top of the water and I saw how big he was, I couldn't believe he didn't put up more of a fight," he said.

Like every fisherman Rivenbark had a tale of an even larger ray that he wasn't ever able to reel in from a few years ago. "I have seen and lost one a few years ago that was about 4 feet wider than this one."

"I have been fishing ever since and I have caught almost everything around here there is to catch. I fish on the pier and boats and in lakes and ponds. If there is water I will fish it. You never know what you will catch," he concluded.
