Authorities said a passenger, apparently upset after a phone call, grabbed the steering wheel.
ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
What started out as a typical crash
investigation in Albertville is now being investigated as a crime.
The wreck happened just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday on
Martling Road near the Collier Drive intersection.
Once police arrived and began interviewing
witnesses, they learned that the passenger of the vehicle at fault grabbed the
steering wheel and turned the car into oncoming traffic, causing a three-car
pileup. Police said witnesses claimed to see a man in one of the vehicles
running from the scene.
After further investigation, police learned
that prior to the crash, the passenger in the vehicle that caused the accident
had just ended a phone call that appeared to have upset him. The crash sent two
people to the hospital.
"It's bad enough it was involving children,
but the injuries were to two passengers in one of the vehicles," said
Albertville Assistant Police Chief Jamie Smith. "One of them happened to be a
toddler, is what I was told, and the other was an infant."
Smith said they are now seeking contact with
the individual who fled the scene. Possible assault charges could be filed.
