MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama's annual rehearsal of hurricane evacuations along Interstate 65 will be held this afternoon starting around 2 p.m., according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The state developed its plan in 1999 after Hurricane Floyd hit the East Coast. It started practicing the plan in 2000. It has successfully helped the Gulf Coast evacuate during Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Dennis in 2005.

Officials with ALDOT, the Alabama National Guard and multiple Alabama State Troopers will be positioned along I-65 between Montgomery and Baldwin Country where they will simulate the emergency reversal of traffic along I-65. The process, known as "contraflow", makes all lanes carry northbound traffic.

This is only a rehearsal so commuters do not have to worry about any actual redirection or detours of traffic during the exercise.

There will be 24 checkpoints along the interstate, which include 21 interchanges between State Road 225 in Mobile County and the north terminus point in Montgomery.
