MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

As parents at St. Jude Educational Institute and students scramble to figure out where they will go to school next year, athletes have received new information about where they will be allowed to play sports.

The Alabama high school athletic association has issued a special ruling regarding athletes at St. Jude..

Under normal circumstances, a student who transfers from one AHSAA school to another member school - would not be immediately eligible to play sports.

But the Association has made adjustments for St. Jude student athletes only - allowing them to play at any member school they choose next year.  There is one exception - athletes can only receive financial aid from a catholic school and maintain eligibility.  That means if they stay in montgomery, the only option for athletes to receive financial aid and remain eligible to play sports, is montgomery catholic preparatory school.

Many parents, alumni, and supporters are still trying to keep St. Jude Educational Institute open, hoping to raise enough money to sustain it at least one more year.

The school announced two weeks ago it was closing because it was quote - "not financially viable".  Friday is its final day.
