John Knight released copies Thursday of the resignation letter he sent to Board of Trustees Chairman Elton Dean and ASU President Gwendolyn Boyd.

Knight, who has been with ASU since 1976, currently serves as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer.

In his letter to Dean, Knight wrote that, "In the 38 years that have passed, I have had the honor of sharing in many of the most pivotal moments in our University's history and development. These times of both challenge and success have indeed defined, what I hope will be regarded as a distinguished career of service to ASU, and I am forever grateful for them."

Knight's letter to Boyd indicates he will retire, effective July 1, 2014 but notes that, "I will also utilize considerable hours of annual leave that have accumulated."

Knight also serves as a Democrat state representative for Montgomery. Due to a state "double-dipping" law that forbids earning of two state paychecks, he would not be able to hold both jobs at the same time. He has previously indicated his plans to retire from ASU and seek re-election.
