FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

Fort Benning is honoring soldiers who died while serving our country before Memorial Day.

A wreath laying ceremony was conducted along with the graduation of two basic training companies from the 198th Infantry Brigade at the National Infantry Museum on Friday morning.

Earlier this week, soldiers placed 8,000 American flags on graves at the main post cemetery.

Memorial Day was first observed in 1868 and was declared a federal holiday in 1971.
