Memorial Day weekend safety reminders

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

This is the weekend many have waited for  -- it's Memorial Day and the start of the summer vacation season.

Millions are hitting the road for the Memorial Day weekend. Plenty of extra police are on the road too.

Whether it's a planned barbecue in the backyard, a trip to the Gulf Shores or to reflect on the meaning of the Memorial Day holiday, many have big plans.

All signs are leading to a sunny destination of relaxation for many drivers on the interstate.

Barbeque and Memorial Day go hand in hand. Many kicked off their holiday weekend at places like Dreamland Barbecue in Montgomery where management says nearly 500 slabs of ribs will be sold this holiday weekend.

"Memorial Day is busy. Many decided they don't want to cook. They want to have some fun and maybe drink some beer and go to the pool and a lot of people come by, take stuff to the lake, take stuff to their houses or their friends houses. It's a good time. It's a lot of fun," said Dreamland General Manager Bob Parker.

Hundreds of people will also enjoy fun in the sun boating on Lake Martin.

No matter what your plans are law enforcement officers urge you to:

  • Avoid driving or boating while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Restrict access and closely monitoring teens to prevent underage drinking
  • Buckle up -- no matter how short the trip -- on the road or on the water.
  • When you are using your grills be sure to keep an eye out on the fire and never leave it unattended.
  • Have fun, but be safe.
