WINSTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

The Memorial Day weekend turned tragic for an Arley family after their 7-year-old drowned at Smith Lake.

Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris says 7-year-old Joshua Alexander and his 5-year-old brother were wading in Smith Lake in an area called Cable Crossings when Joshua slipped into deeper water. The area is very shallow in some parts, but does have drop offs.

Sheriff Harris says the adults were loading the car and didn't see Joshua go under the water.

"By the time they got down there he was underwater," Sheriff Harris said. "They found him. It was such a remote area they had to drive to cell phone coverage and they just continued driving to Arley to meet the fire department rescue unit there."

Sheriff Harris says they drive probably took about 15 minutes. Joshua was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Neither of the boys were wearing life jackets. Officer John Williams with Alabama Marine Police said unfortunately, that is not uncommon to see.

"We see it all the time. We always stress life jackets save lives," Williams said.

Joshua had just finished up the first grade at Curry Elementary School. He was at the lake camping with his family.
