FORT MITCHELL, AL (WTVM) -

Fort Mitchell officials honored veterans on Sunday during their Memorial Day celebration.

The Fort Mitchell National Cemetery hosted the memorial service to honor fallen soldiers. The annual service pays tribute to the thousand of soldier buried there, but also recognizes veterans who are still with us today.

"…Raise awareness that these men and women died serving our country and we can set aside one day out of the year that we're all thinking about the same thing paying tribute to their service and to their families," says Anthony Clay, Director of the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.

Former Columbus mayor Bob Poydasheff was the guest speaker. Poydasheff is a retired United States army colonel.
