BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Memorial Day weekend is the big kick off to the summer. Many will be heading to the lake at some point over the next few months.

Alabama Marine Police cannot stress the importance of being safe on the water. Rhey say the best way to ensure your safety is to wear a life jacket. In fact, John Williams with the Alabama Marine Police says it doesn't matter how old or how young you are, a life jacket is a must.

"Anytime you're in the water something could go wrong. You cramp up. That is going to keep you afloat and give you a chance," said Williams.

Williams says parents should also wear life jackets to set a good example for their children.
