Carver Elementary, Carver High, Davis Elementary, Fitzpatrick Elementary, Johnson Elementary, McInnis, Macmillan International Academy and McKee Middle make up Montgomery Public Schools District 6.

Incumbent Robert Porterfield is asking voters to put  him back in office, but his opponent Timothy Bass feels it's time for change.

"I would like to see MPS reach a level in which every child is a success, every child is a graduate. I will continue to give my all in preparing them for the future," says Porterfield.

Bass says of his run for office, "I want to give the public a choice of someone different with new ideas and a fresh perspective."

Both candidates believe their experience within MPS makes them the ideal candidate.  Porterfield taught for more than 30 years in the district. Bass has served the last three years as a teacher's aide.  He says, "I am in the classroom everyday talking with students, talking with teachers. I'm on the front lines."

Porterfield believes, "The children are what's important. My priority - our children, our future."

If elected, Bass said he would improve the school safety and the system's integrity. He feels, " The integrity of the system has been in question with the grade changing scandal.  Accountability starts at the top with the school board."

Porterfield believes the graduation rate and funding are key areas to address.  He says, "We have to look at ways and means of increasing the graduation rate and decreasing the dropout rate.  We have programs that we are working on to certainly accomplish that."

Porterfield and Bass are running as Democrats.
