PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

Interim City Manager Steve Smith has been the Director of Finance for Phenix City since Aug. 2002. Since then, he's served the city in various capacities.

"I've also served, while here, as the interim Utilities Director for a period of two years, and as interim H.R. Director for a short period of time," Smith explains.

Smith tells us he'll use these experiences to become a productive member of the team assembled by former city manager Wallace Hunter.

"Wallace Hunter put a terrific team of people together here. I've been a consultant all around the country, I've been in hundreds of small cities. This is one of the best groups in terms of a team of department directors and professionals that I've ever seen in place anywhere," Smith adds.

And he says he's depending on support from that team and the community to help him fulfill his duties.

"It's a job that requires a lot of assistance," Smith said. "You've got to have good department people, and you've got to have the support of the public."

The Memphis, Tenn. native, and a former member of the Naval Air Reserves during the Vietnam era says he plans to continue the work Hunter and other councilors have been doing to positively impact Phenix City.

Smith boasts, "We want to build projects that people are proud of. We want the people of Phenix City to be able to say 'I'm from Phenix City' and stick their chests out when they say it and be proud of saying it."

Smith is serving as both the city manager and finance director right now. He's a graduate of the University of Memphis, and will serve as the interim until either a permanent replacement is selected or another interim is named. According to the city charter if an interim sits in the city manager's seat for longer than four months, that person automatically becomes the permanent city manager.
