JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County authorities say a man who fired a shot while robbing a Subway sandwich shop on Tuesday night is still on the loose.

Authorities described the suspect as a black male wearing a black and gray shirt and camouflage pants. He entered the Subway in the 2100 block of Center Point Parkway and ordered a sandwich a little around 9 p.m.

Deputies say while the workers were making his sandwich, he drew a handgun, leaped over the counter and demanded money from the safe.

When the employees said they couldn't open the safe, he hit them each on the head with his handgun and fired a single shot into the ceiling, Chief Deputy Randy Christian with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

The man grabbed cash from the register, plus his sandwich, and ran out. Deputies got to the Subway a little after 9 p.m. and searched the surrounding area for the suspect but did not find him.

One of the employees was treated by paramedics on the scene and the other declined to have medical attention, Christian said.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 205-325-1450.
