TALLADEGA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

How would you react if a shooting range was being built near your home? That's the reality for some people in Talladega County.

Talladega Marksmanship Park is currently under construction. It's a multi-million dollar project that will include pistol and rifle ranges as well as 12-station sporting clay range.

It's located just south of Talladega Super Speedway. While many people can't wait for the opening in February 2014, there are some that feel differently.

"I do not want to be within ten miles of this place when the range opens," said Howard Jackson.

Jackson's property backs up against the 500-acre development. The clay shooting range will be right behind his home.

"When I come home I want to come home to peace and quiet," said Jackson.

Jackson says what's more frustrating is his community was left blindsided by this development. He didn't know the range was coming until construction had already begun.

"There are about 40-50 homes here, low income. We just feel like we're being strong armed basically they are throwing something on us and we have not control of it," said Jackson.

Mark Johnson, who is with the Civilian Marksmanship Program, says his company intends to be good neighbors. Johnson says they've hired a range designer to help ensure this facility is safe, and not a nuisance to the community. He feels once the range is open, many fears will be eased.

Jackson is not so sure but he knows one thing: the range will be opening.

"It's far too gone for us to stop it," said Jackson.

FOX 6 has reached out to county officials, but have not yet heard back.
