ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
An Alabama State Senate candidate is firing back after some have criticized a Facebook post and mailer with a picture of his family holding guns.
Republican candidate Jonathan Berryhill said only his wife, older children, and he are holding real guns in the picture. According to Berryhill, his younger children are holding guns, but he said those are pellet guns and not real firearms.
In the Facebook post, the picture contains a statement underneath that reads: "You want'em? Come and take them."
Berryhill's mailer contains a different message but the same picture. Some people have taken to the candidate's Facebook page to voice their support or concern about the photo.
"That's what I'm talking about. AMEN BROTHER!!! We need to see this in a lot more households," said Rita Voughn under the photo on Berryhill's Facebook page. Grayce Taylor posted, "Got my attention. For every gun pictured here, I am making a $100 donation to the opposing party."
Jonathan Berryhill is running for the State Senate District 1 seat.
Berryhill said he took the photo with his family as a joke and posted it on Facebook. When it received positive feedback, he decided to put it on his mailers.
