BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County voting officials are ready for the June 3 primary, the first in which voters will need a photo ID.

"There's some hoops we're going to have to, some steps we're going to have to touch and bases we're going to have to touch and this is just one of those we're going to have to work through all of this," Jefferson County Probate Judge Alan King said.

King said voters now have to have a valid photo ID when they head to the polls.

"Basically it's a drivers license, it's a government issued ID. If you work for the county, if you work for the federal government or if you work for the state of Alabama. College student photo ID., U.S. passport, a military ID, tribal photo ID," said King.

King says IDs from from large companies like Alabama Power, AT&T or hospitals aren't valid for voting.

King also explained what the process for voters who have changed addresses since registering. King reminds voters that even if they haven't updated their drivers license or other photo ID, they must go to the polling place for their new address.

"They'll go to the new precinct, fill out the voter form, they will vote a provisional ballot because they're not on the rolls in that precinct either," said King.

That vote will be added to the official vote a week later.

"Bottom line now and in the future if someone changes their address they need to also contact the board of registrars," King said.

You must register at least 10 days before an election in order to vote. If you would like more information about the new changes call your local registrar's office.
