Victims say stabbing was over sexuality

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Two men who were stabbed outside a Huntsville nightclub early Saturday morning spoke about their harrowing experience.

The stabbing happened on a night when the club hosts a crowd of mostly gay and lesbian patrons – and that's what witnesses said fueled the violence.

The incident started just before 3 a.m. in the parking lot of Classic Wheels Lounge on Memorial Parkway. Most patrons were leaving, but instead of going home, two men had to go to the hospital.

Classic Wheels Lounge has hosted alternative night for more than three years, but two guests who pulled up were far from Friday night's normal crowd. Owner C.T. Harris said the two men began yelling anti-gay slurs.

"It was scary," Montero Ford, one of the victims, said. "I didn't know gay bashing still existed."

One man stayed in the car while the other went on a rampage, stabbing two gay men, Ford and Mautravion Mangrum. Ford said one of his stab wounds was just inches from his heart.

"A stranger could have took my life over my sexuality," Ford said.

"Anywhere else we go, we are unwelcome," Mangrum told us. "I'm angry because I had nothing to do with anything."

Mangrum was stabbed five times. Now, he says he only wants one thing. "Justice should be served in this situation," he said.

And he has a question to the attacker. "Why not respect me like I respect you?"

One of the club's promoters said Huntsville police will now be at every alternative night to prevent any future incidents.

Our Saturday weather was right on par with what we have been dealing with across central and south Alabama all week long... it was hot (temperatures made their way into the low/mid 90s), it was humid (heat index values went above 100° in many towns) and we saw some relief from the heat thanks to a few isolated areas of rain.
