Victim recovers after Hazel Green shooting

Deputies said two men fired shots, but only one was hit. Deputies said two men fired shots, but only one was hit.

Madison County deputies said a man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being shot during a domestic dispute.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Sunday night on Stephens Road in Hazel Green. Investigators are trying to figure out if the shooting was in self defense. Deputies said the incident involved a woman, her ex-boyfriend and her current boyfriend.

When deputies responded to a domestic disturbance and shots fired call, they said they found Dick Patterson with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Before he was shot, a witness said the Patterson showed up at the scene with a gun and shot at a woman. The other man got his gun and started shooting back at the Patterson, eventually hitting him in the abdomen.

Deputies took the uninjured man in for questioning, but they said the shooting may have been self defense. They also said alcohol was involved in the incident.

His father, who lives next door, recounted how he said the incident took place.

"Him, a dude and another girl came in that car, and they were drinking," said Theodore Patterson. "And they go fussing, finally went right out yonder, then went back down. That dude shot Dick and I don't know what happened. But that dude shot (my) only son."

After undergoing surgery on Monday, Patterson's family said he is in stable condition at the hospital.

The case is still under investigation.
