Arab council to vote on historical district

ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Arab is looking to designate much of its downtown business area into a historical district.

A city council vote is expected Monday evening. The mayor said the designation would be financially beneficial for business owners, both in restoring their buildings and improving their bottom line.

Plans for the historical district were mapped out following months of discussion and edits. Mayor Bob Joslin said a consultant has spent time identifying and documenting properties with historical significance.

The mayor feels it is important to preserve the historical character of the downtown area, and designating it as such will do just that. Joslin said by keeping downtown structures historically accurate, it will become an invitation for shoppers to come downtown.

"As we rejuvenate the downtown area, we would like to have a period to look to it, and have everybody working under the same guidelines when they renovate or do something to the exterior of their building," said Joslin. "We don't have any requirements on the interior, but for the exterior, we would like to have a theme."

Once designated, Joslin said historic property owners will be eligible for state and federal grants to begin work on their buildings' exterior.
