MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A big race in the primary election in Madison County is the race for school superintendent. It's an election we don't see in every district.

Alabama is one of the few states where school superintendents are either elected or appointed based on the district.

According to the Southern Legislative Conference, all city school superintendents in the state are appointed by the school board.

When it comes to county school superintendents, that's where it varies. They can either be elected or appointed based on the county.

According to the SLC, 27 counties in Alabama appoint and 40 elect their superintendent.

Proponents for elected superintendents argue that it provides a more democratic school system because the superintendent answers to the people, not necessarily the school board.

Those in favor of an appointed superintendent say it increases the pool of qualified candidates because they don't have to be residents of a district to be appointed to the job.
