Editorial: "Not Good Enough"

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

32% in 1998, 35% in 2002, 38.4% in 2006 and 32.2% in 2010 … those are the final voter turnout percentages in the last four non-presidential year primaries here in Alabama.

Folks, that isn't good enough. This mean 3 out of 10 registered Alabama voters are exercising their right to vote or said differently, 7 out of 10 are not.  A trend towards more participation in our 2014 primary taking place this week doesn't look promising as our Alabama Secretary of State Jim Bennett is anticipating 25-27% turnout with registered voters; not good enough.

There really isn't a good reason not to vote. Polling locations are easy to find, the hours are convenient, the process is simple and the impact your one vote can make is substantial.  Furthermore, we have service men and women stationed all over the world working to preserve our rights to regular, fair and open elections.

The fact of the matter is we (you) have the ability to shape our city, state and nation, but in order to do that you have to participate in the electoral process.  So if you didn't vote this week in the primary go ahead and commit to exercising your vote in the November general election.  Join in making Alabama a great place to live with leaders being voted in by the majority and not the minuscule.

The subject of legalizing marijuana is more openly discussed these days, but I sense I will be long gone before our state ever passes such legislation.
