Parents again warned to stop using Nap Nanny after another baby dies

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Two years after a company went out of business over an unsafe product, a sixth child has died while using the Nap Nanny.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is again warning parents to avoid using the Nap Nanny and Nap Nanny Chill infant recliners and covers.

An 8-month-old New Jersey baby secured by a belt was found partly hanging over the side of a Nap Nanny recliner, trapped between the product and a crib bumper. The little girl died.

"It's a mother's worst nightmare," says mother Jennifer Grant.

Grant is worried about what can happen to babies using Nap Nanny products.

"You really depend on these products to be safe for children," says Grant.

CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson said parents should avoid the recliners at yard sales, as hand-me-downs or in online auctions. It is illegal to sell or resell the product, which was recalled months ago.

"Our message to parents is clear: Stop using it. It's dangerous," Wolfson said. "There's been six deaths already, and we don't want another child to die unnecessarily."

Approximately 165,000 Nap Nanny and Nap Nanny Chill products were sold between 2009 and 2012.

Despite the criticism and a legal settlement in the death of one child, Nap Nanny founder Leslie Gudel has said that if her products are used properly they are safe.

Some parents like Kelly Goodwin feel a child's safety is mostly their responsibility.

"I would say it mostly lies on parents to do their due diligence," says Goodwin.

And she says if you need to spend a little more money to make sure your child is safe it's worth it.

"I think with baby equipment you get what you pay for," says Goodwin.
