BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

An investigation into fraud along the I-65 corridor between Birmingham and Huntsville has led to 164 felony warrants for six people, according to the Gardendale Police Department.

Investigators say they were notified in February 2014 by Regions Bank of a point of sale compromise in various Birmingham restaurants.

Information from customers was used in a network of credit and debit card fraud across the entire United States, with a large concentration along I-65 from Birmingham to Huntsville.

Authorities believe a restaurant in north Jefferson County unknowingly had its credit card system hacked into with a malware virus.

Customers would come in, eat and pay for their food with a debit or credit card. But when their card was swiped, the virus would steal the card holder's account information and send it to an offsite company.

Authorities say the company collected hundreds of accounts, then sold them in batches online. Police believe six suspects bought some of those batches, then made fake credit cards with the stolen account numbers and used them to purchase gift cards.

In all, Gardendale police think between 200 to 500 cards were comprimised, but other jurisdictions are investigating similar claims, so there could be even more victims.

Multiple suspects were identified by the investigation, including some members of a Birmingham-based rap group that called themselves "Hood Dynasty."

Police believe the suspects used the gift cards bought with the fake credit cards to make everyday purchases and finance "Hood Dynasty."

"It's an easy, non-violent way to make a large amount of money in a short amount of time without physically coming in concat or violently coming in contact to obtain that money fraudulently," Gardednale police detective Chris Clark said.

On March 17, two warrants were obtained for searches in the Holiday Gardens community of Irondale. Involved in the searches were Gardendale officers and the Birmingham Field Division of the U.S. Secret Service. Irondale SWAT Team, under the leadership of Lieutenant Paul Kellogg, provided tactical support.

The investigation yielded 164 felony warrants. The suspects, as listed by Gardendale police, are:

Eric Jose Azcona, a 27 year old black male from Huntsville, AL is charged with 28 Fraudulent Uses of a Credit Card, 26 Identity Thefts, Trafficking in Stolen Identities, and Theft of Property First Degree for a total of 56 felony warrants and a bond of $1,260,000.

A female suspect, Kenosha Shaw, is also wanted in connection to the case.

All suspects remain at large. Anyone with info is asked to call the Gardendale Police Department at 205-631-8787 and ask for Detective Chris Clark.
