CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (KIII/CNN) - Across the country this month, high schools are preparing for graduation ceremonies. For one senior in Texas, that rite of passage came early.

Joshua Nino, who has spent the last three years battling a rare form of cancer, was surprised with a graduation ceremony at his home.

It's every high school student's dream: to walk the stage on graduation day. But for Joshua Nino, that won't be possible. He is home bound, fighting a rare form of cancer.

"We wanted to do something special for him. He has completed all of his courses and he deserves something to realize that there is still more to go," said Calallen High School Principal Yvonne Neth.

The school principal and Joshua's classmates decided to bring graduation to him. Joshua had no clue of the surprise ceremony. Tears of joy ran down his face as his counselor dressed him in a cap and gown. And his fellow classmates lined up to participate in the ceremony.

"Josh, we just wanted to come and congratulate you on meeting your requirements for graduation, so we wanted to give you a diploma," Neth said to Josh.

Thank you.

"I was really excited because if anybody deserves it, it's him. I know that its been hard not being able to go to school and get to do all the prom and project graduation," said classmate Jillian Howell.

"It's a big step in my life and so (inaudible) everybody celebrated with me, in a way that i didn't expect, was very special," Josh said.

For many students - this was sort of a reunion. Since many had not seen Joshua for a few months due to his illness.

But on this day - cancer took a back seat. For one of the most important rite of passages for any young person.

"My future plans are to live life and be happy," Josh said.

As for Joshua's health, the family says chemo and radiation have proven ineffective in fighting this form of cancer.

They are now trying an alternative herb treatment.
