Third rabies report of the year for Houston County

Posted: Updated:

The third positive case of animal rabies of 2014 is being confirmed by the Houston County Health Department after a racoon was found to be infected on June 1.

The animal was found on Billy Snell Road, according to health department investigators, after a resident's dog fought with it. The owner asked for the racoon to be tested, officials say, adding that there was no human exposure and the dog is being vaccinated.

Residents are being asked to make sure their pets have all current rabies vaccinations, which is required by state law if their dog or cat is older than 3 months.

Authorities say parents should avoid allowing their children to play with wild or stray animals and report such animals to animal control officers.

If bitten by an animal, you should wash the wound in soap and hot water immediately, then seek medical attention, as well as report the bite to a local health department.
