Off-track betting options available for Belmont

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Placing your bets on the Belmont Saturday? Your options to wager will be a little different this year. No agreement between thoroughbred horse racers and Colonial Downs has forced the closure of several off-track betting facilities.

If you want to bet on the Belmont, and a possible Triple Crown win by California Chrome, there are few places still open.

Several off-track betting facilities across the state have shut down, but there are still four open. Two of them right here in Richmond.

"I am expecting a huge crowd," said Jeffery Wingrove with Colonial Downs.

This is an exciting time of year for racing fans, but because there is no racing agreement set for this year at Colonial Downs, there is also confusion for those who want to place a bet.

"It's been a little bit difficult in the fact that we're trying to educate people on how to make wagers," Wingrove said.

You can still place a bet at an OTB facility, but this year there is an extra step.

"Years past you would just come up to a teller and they would take your wager. This year, you actually have many options through our easy horse play system. You can come here, you can go to one of over 125 locations throughout the state," he explained.

All you have to do is open and fund your Easy Horse Play account.

"We have a lot of people to help you open an account," Wingrove said.

If you choose not to go to an OTB facility, you can log onto the Easy Horse Play website to sign up from your computer and even your smart phone.

"They have many options," he added.

The excitement of a Triple Crown win has brought many out to OTB facilities.

"It's been a while since we've even had a shot at the triple crown and this year is very favorable," Wingrove said.

But even with all that excitement, live thoroughbred racing at Colonial Downs this year is still on the minds of people who work here.

"I am very hopeful for horse racing in Virginia," he said.

Negotiations between Colonial Downs, and the V.H.B.P.A. are ongoing, but there's still no agreement. If you would like to place a bet, those off-track betting facilities are located at 4700 Broad Street, and at Hurley's Tavern, in Innsbrook.
