BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County teacher Tracy Spraggins says she just couldn't believe it. The life-saving transplant she had prayed for and had been counting on wasn't going to happen even though a donor had been found.

"I cried, I really did cry. You know, it's hurtful," Spraggins said.

FOX6 first reported on Spraggins' story in April. Spraggins, a Special Education teacher at Rudd Middle School, was suffering from lupus and was in need of new kidney. That's when her husband P.J. stepped in.

"I got tested to see if I was a match, and they said I was a perfect match," he said.

In preparation for the surgery, the couple went on a diet and lost a lot of weight. That's why they were shocked when further testing revealed P.J.'s high blood pressure, hadn't decreased with the weight loss.

"Basically, long story short, they decided to rule against me donating a kidney to my wife," P.J. said.

"It was kind of a shot in the gut, not a shot, it was more like a punch in the gut," Tracy said.

Now the couple is back to square one and in desperate need of a donor.

"It's been a journey, but faith has gotten me through," said Tracy.

"We firmly believe that God has his hands on us at all times and I think it's going to be a positive outcome, I really do," said P.J.

The Spraggins are asking anyone who is willing to donate a kidney to register with UAB. To register, go to http://www.uabmedicine.org/kidneytransplant.
