A joint investigation by the Greenville Police Department, Secret Service and Internal Revenue Service has led to the arrest of a former funeral home director.

Doug Harrison, 57, of Greenville was arrested Monday on six counts of theft of property. Greenville police officials say he mishandled money paid for certain funeral contracts.

According to Greenville police Lt. Justin Lovvorn, the department received their first complaint on Harrison and Harrison Funeral Home about a year ago and began looking into his business practices with federal agencies.

Lovvorn says the problem stems from Harrison's selling of preneed agreements whereby clients can purchase funeral and burial goods and services prior to death.

Police say Harrison was using the money for his own profit, either for himself or for his business. Greenville PD believed that their investigation uncovered enough probable cause to show that he was defrauding customers of their money.

In 2003, Lovvorn says the state issued Harrison a cease and desist order from selling preneed agreements and in 2011, he received a court order from a judge to stop selling the agreements but he continued selling them.

The investigations by the IRS and Secret Service continue.
