COVINGTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

A man facing multiple charges connected to a home invasion in 2005 in Covington County has been indicted for a murder more than 30 years ago in Florida.

Jackie Darrell Long has been indicted by an Okaloosa County grand jury on a charge of first degree premeditated or felony murder.

Leonard "Buddy" Phelps, a businessman who built steel hull work boats, was murdered at his home in Niceville, FL in October 1981. The scene of the murder is now North Light Marina -- a well known boat life and restaurant, according to the Okaloosa County sheriff's office.

According to the sheriff's office, Jackie Long has been considered a suspect in the murder since the beginning, but the investigation was stagnant until the last few years when new leads were developed.

The investigation uncovered evidence and witnesses in other cold cases, including a home invasion in Covington County, AL.

Long was indicted in July 2013 for allegedly burglarizing, robbing and beating Henry Maxie Jordan on New Year's Eve 2005 at his home in Wing. Long's son, Shane Long, has pleaded guilty in the incident.

Investigators say the Phelps murder investigation isn't over and "several spinoff investigations are ongoing."
