More arms manufacturers eye N. AL expansion

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Madison County leaders confirmed they are fielding inquiries from other arms manufacturers about expanding into North Alabama, on the heels of Remington's announcement earlier this year about bringing thousands of jobs to Huntsville at its new facility.

We have contacted more than a dozen arms manufacturers to determine who might be considering a North Alabama expansion. Several have responded, but no one is saying whether they are eyeing such a move, but no one is denying talking to local leaders either.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley announced during a speech in Huntsville Wednesday that he believes the addition of Remington will lead to further arms manufacturers coming to the state.

Madison County Commissioner Dale Strong confirmed arms manufacturers have contacted state and local leaders about opportunities in Madison County. When asked if we have recruited those gun-makers or if they contacted on their own accord, Commissioner Strong said they reached out to us after the Remington deal went down.

"Others arms companies are looking at what Remington is doing," said Strong. "What's obvious is you can do business in Madison County 20-30 percent more profitable than you can in other states. So I believe Remington has set the tone that has opened the eyes of other firearms manufacturers."
