JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
"You are a bunch of rednecks," Jefferson County assistant tax assessor Andrew Bennett said to three county commissioners in a meeting on Wednesday.
Bennett, who is African-American, made the statement after the three white Republican Jefferson County commissioners refused his request to pay almost $2,000 to cover a trip to Orange Beach this week to attend an association meeting of tax accessors.
Bennett lost in the Democratic primary last week. Some county commissioners called him a lame duck.
Commissioner David Carrington said the county has to stop sending so many people out of town to meetings. The state of Alabama is expected to pay for the cost, but commissioners said it's still taxpayers' money.
Bennett said he was denied because he opposed the commission on raising sewer rates and closing Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.
Bennett said the Republicans' actions were racist. Commissioner Joe Knight said they acted out of financial reasons, not race.
