WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -

The Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce has raised more than 80 percent towards its goal of $1.5 million. The money has come from pledges over a 5-year period.

Chamber leaders started identifying potential investors a few months ago, and had its official fundraiser kick-off Saturday night.

"We needed more space." said Chamber Executive Director Vanessa Lynch.

The plan is to renovate all five buildings on one city block in front of the old Elmore County Courthouse that the chamber bought two summers ago. The project will coincide with the city's move to revitalize downtown in terms of infrastructure and street work.

"They're already surveying and taking measurements.' said Lynch.

Vanessa Lynch says what they want to do is turn much of the block into business incubators, meeting rooms and spaces. By doing this they hope it will be the catalyst to bringing life back to downtown Wetumpka.

"We've had so many people feel so passionate about bringing downtown back and we hope to see the momentum." said Lynch.

That 'momentum' may have already started. Lynch tells WSFA 12 News the city attorney went ahead and fixed up her building across the street.

Work on the roof of the chamber-owned buildings begins in about two months. Lynch isn't sure yet when the entire project will be completed.
