Crenshaw Co. searching for new superintendent

Superintendent Randy Wilkes Superintendent Randy Wilkes
CRENSHAW CO., AL (WSFA) -

Crenshaw County will have to find a new superintendent. Randy Wilkes is leaving to be the new superintendent in Phenix City starting July 1st.

Folks in Crenshaw County are sad to see him go. "I immediately got tears in my eyes," says teacher Crystal Alsbrooks. And former teacher Patsy Owens says, "I feel like we're just losing two good people from our community and we're losing a good superintendent.

"All of our schools are academically clear, we are fiscally sound, we have strong facilities, he just this past season started efforts to get the vocational school back in, partnering with SMART to get our students job ready."

And in the process of leading students, Alsbrooks says he led the entire community. "He came in as a strong Christian leader for our schools, someone who had beliefs and didn't hold back with those beliefs and united us as a community."

Wilkes says Phenix City just contacted him about the job last week. He was not one of the two candidates publicly known to be interviewed.

Wilkes was elected to the superintendent's position. That's been changed to an appointed position. "The Board will take appropriate action to name an interim superintendent as well as proceed with the search for a new superintendent," said Board chair Ronald Rhodes in a written statement.
