MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A living music legend is coming to Montgomery as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival announced Thursday it will host Smokey Robinson in concert this summer.

It will be the theatre's first "benefit the bard" concert, which is hoping to raise $600,000. The money will go toward ASF's school fest program.

"It has been expanding over the past couple of years," said Geoffrey Sherman, ASF artistic director. "It is something that is not just theatre for school children, but theatre for young people and bringing them into the building to do things other than watch plays. I just think it is an extraordinary program."

Smokey Robinson is set to perform on August 23.

The event is a private fundraiser, but a limited number of tickets will be made available to the general public on Thursday through an online auction through the theatre's website.
