TALLASSEE, AL (WSFA) -

The Tallassee Police Department has released a man wanted for questioning in a weekend attempted murder case without filing charges against him.

Robert Denard Hayes, 26, also known as Scooter, reportedly turned himself in at police headquarters on Monday. He was questioned but later released pending further investigation.

Hayes was wanted in connection with a shooting in the Jordanville area of Tallassee. Police say the victim in the case was shot once in the back during a verbal altercation around 2 a.m. in the 400 block of Second Avenue in Tallassee. The argument was apparently over a female.

"This was an argument between the two men over an unidentified female," said Police Chief Jimmy Rodgers.

The victim was transported to a local hospital by private vehicle. He's in serious but stable condition, according to police.

During the investigation, Hayes was identified as a suspect. He was accused of firing three rounds at the victim, striking the victim once in the back. Police say Hayes and the victim are acquaintances.

Hayes is allegedly connected to another shooting that occurred around two months ago in the same area of town. "We are still investigating that case to see what role he played. Hayes' co-defendant was arrested in that investigation," said Rodgers.
