BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Investigators believe a man was killed on Sunday while trying to protect his neighbor.

Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards says that the man who was killed lived directly across the street from a home that was being burglarized in the 1800 block of 3rd Place Southwest.

Police say three burglary suspects had been casing the neighborhood when an elderly woman came outside. Two of them got out of the car and forced the woman back into her home, then began to rob her.

According to officers, the man who lived across the street saw what was going on. At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the neighbor and the alleged burglars. The neighbor was shot in the exchange.

South Precinct officers responded to the scene around 4:35 p.m. and found the victim lying in his driveway, suffering from several gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to UAB Hospital, where he later died. He has been identified as Arthur Mills, a 53-year-old man from Birmingham.

"It's pathetic. I think it's something that individuals participate in this type of activity. (They) don't have a care for life or for other people's property," said Edwards.

While the victim might have been attempting to intervene, Lt. Edwards says to call 911 instead.

A person of interest is in custody, however two other suspects are still believed to be at large.

Police say anyone with information about the case is asked to call the BPD Homicide Unit 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
