Montgomery athletes medal at Special Olympics USA Games

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Two Montgomery students can check gold medals off their bucket list. The two students competed with members of Team Alabama adding more medals to the collection at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey.

Shaniayah Herron and Devontay Henderson won both Gold and Silver medals at this year's Special Olympics which occurred during the week of June 14 through the 21.

"We are all smiles in the Special Education Office at Bellinger Hill." says Director Katrina Johnson. "We're extremely proud of our students for their accomplishments. We sent our kids out to compete amongst 3500 other athletes from around the country and they came back victorious; ranking top in the nation."

Other Alabama athletes finished big in the games including John Shockley, Sean Carr and Ashley Kelley won gold medals for singles competition in tennis. Joyce Adams won silver. Adams and Kelley won gold medals in doubles. Shockley and Carr were silver doubles winners.

The Dothan athletes earned gold and silver medals in the 1K time trial competition. Jeffrey Hicks and Brandi Deese received gold medals in 1K Time Trial, while Zachary Grice, silver medal in the Trial.

This is the first year that Alabama has had a cycling team, but this hasn't stopped the three athletes who took gold and silver in the 500 meter cycling Monday. Jeffrey Hicks and Brandi Deese took gold in the 500 meters while Zachary Grice took home silver in the 500 meters.

Also the Alabama's 10 member flag football team beat Missouri in their second game. They ended the day 2 of pool play with a 2 to 2 record.

In all there are 19 athletes representing the wiregrass in the competition. Along with the cyclists there are two golfers and four tennis players.
