MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Faulkner University football program named their new head coach on Monday.

Charlie Boren, who has served as the Eagles assistant coach for the past two seasons, will replace Brent Barker as the new head coach. Barker resigned last week to accept a position in his home state of Texas.

Boren joined the staff prior to the 2012 season when Barker took over, and since then the Eagles have had two winning seasons. In 2012, the Eagles had their first winning record at 6-5, and last year the team went 9-3 earning Faulkner's first ever bid to the NAIA playoffs.

"It was a blessing to be able to come to Faulkner two and a half years ago, and now to be the head coach of this program is a dream come true for me," Boren said. "This is the type job I've always envisioned having. I love the small college atmosphere where you can really impact the lives of your student-athletes, and I have full understanding of the need to embrace the vision of Faulkner as a Christian university."

When Faulkner Vice President for student services, Jean-Noel Thompson, learned of Barker's departure, he knew that Boren was the man for the job.

"Coach Boren has played a major leadership role in the recent success of our football program," Thompson said. "He is well-respected by our coaching staff and players, and has an impressive record as a head coach prior to coming to Faulkner. I am confident that he will foster strong synergy among our coaching staff on both sides of the ball, and will continue in developing a successful program, both on the field and off."
