Opp Middle School teacher arrested on federal firearm charges

A teacher at Opp Middle School has been arrested on federal firearm charges.

Tim Grimes was arrested on Tuesday according to ATF agent Michael Knight. Grimes is the school's Athletic Director and football coach.

Knight could not give specifics on the arrest of Grimes at this time. He says that the information may be available later in the week after legal proceedings are held.The ATF says the case stems from the "Frontline," a strategy to reduce violent crimes in the state of Alabama.

Superintendent of Opp City Schools, Michael Smithart, released a statement on Tuesday stating:

"We are aware of the situation involving Mr. Grimes. Mr. Grimes has been placed on Administrative Leave pending further information. We strenuously emphasize that to our knowledge, this situation involves activity that occurred outside of our campus. I refer you to the investigative office if you have any questions or require any further information."

According to Covington County Schools superintendent Shannon Driver, Grimes was also a contract employee for the summer, teaching driver's education. Driver said that Grimes was arrested at his home in the Rose Hill area. She said that no guns were drawn during the arrest.

At the time of Grimes' arrest, there were three Covington County Schools students with him. The students were transported by law enforcement to the county bus shop where they were collected by their parents.
